News in brief: musical theatre & dance edition

Brace yourself: show tunes are coming.

Yeppoon Choral Society is bringing a lavish rendition of Rodgers & Hammerstein classic The King & I to the Yeppoon Town Hall:

  • Saturday July 14: 7.30pm
  • Sunday July 15: 2pm
  • Friday July 20: 7.30pm
  • Saturday July 21: 2pm

If you're rusty on your musicals, The King & I is the story of English governess Anna brought to Siam (now Thailand) by the king as part of a push to modernise the country.  Hijinks, drama and love ensue.

Rockhampton Musical Union's next outing is Mack & Mabel at the RMU Hall in Denison St on August 3-5.

Mack & Mabel is the story of Mack Sennett, innovator of slapstick comedy in the early days of film in the 1920s and 30s, and silent film actress, screenwriter, director, and producer Mabel Norman.

The RMU Youth Choir has announced the cast for Shrek: The Musical, coming up later this year on October 26-28.  Look out for:

  • Shrek - Dean Netherwood
  • Donkey - Emma Girle
  • Lord Farquaad - Jacob Goves
  • Dragon - Roxanne McDonald

Down the road in Gladstone, the young cast of Conspire Isis Theatre Emsemble's Love Sick are ready to take to the Crow St stage on July 20 & 21.  The show is a 21st century reimagining of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, where girls will be boys, boys will be girls, and #gamergate meets Will Shakespeare himself.

Local dancer Isabella O’Donnell, who trains with the Rockhampton Academy of Dancing, was in Brisbane earlier this month performing in the Brisbane City Youth Ballet's production of  The Magic Toyshop at the Powerhouse Theatre.

The Academy also had two students, Bella and Ailia, in Brisbane for the Royal Academy of Dance Winter Intensive to prep for their upcoming ballet exams.

Speaking of Brisbane, former Emmaus student Lorinda Merrypor is performing in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical at QPAC until the end of August.
