A hundred years ago, at 11 am on November 11 1918, peace wrapped Europe’s battlefields as the First World War came to an end.

Across Central Queensland, we’re marking the armistice with commemorative events, art and film.

InspirexArt have guided a group through the creation of their own remembrance poppies in a special one-off class to create Remembrance Day themed artwork:

BCC Cinemas are running two screenings of They Shall Not Grow Old, directed and produced by Peter Jackson.

Created from audio and video archive footage more than a century old, given new life through today’s technology, this film shows us the First World War through the eyes of the people who were there.

It’s a look back in time, lovingly restored for modern day audiences, exploring the day-to-day experience of the combatants.

The Yeppoon RSL Sub Branch are exhibiting more than 40 artworks depicting First World War sites and memorials by the late Ross Coulter.

A former serviceman himself, Ross had a strong interest in military history which he recorded through his art, and was also the visionary behind Emu Park’s stunning ANZAC Memorial precinct.

The exhibition will only be open on Remembrance Day itself, after the ceremony at 11am until the RSL Club closes for the afternoon.
